"Salvaging the Treasure Within"
|
Mission Statement Through research and education, the mission of the Edward M. Phillips Museum of Maritime History is to honor those intrepid souls and their vessels, who braved the unknown elements of the sea and as a result, paved the way for the Southwest Florida we know today. We will lead dive expeditions in search of southwest Florida's lost or forgotten history. Interpretive displays will exhibit the artifacts we find and preserve for the education of all. With additional research we will document this history and share it with humanity, reminding us all what we are truly capable of and ensuring those intrepid souls will not be forgotten.

I am currently working to make my vison of this museum a reality.
I have four pet projects which I have been intermittently been working on for years. If these shipwrecks are found and/or identified, they will be significant additions to southwest Florida history.
My first step is obtaining my certiciate in Introductory Underwater Archaeology from the Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society. This will give me the knowledge and credentials needed to work with local cultural organizations on these projects. It will also allow me to train other divers in introductory underwater archaeology.
Of course a vision of this magnitude requires assistance. I am not quite sure how to structure this organization at the moment, but I am currently looking to partner with professionals trained in underwater archaeologiy, maritime law, and non profit law, among other professions, to act as a board of directors. Financial backing is also needed.
